Everyday Toxins That May Be Affecting Your Energy and Hormones

You wash your hands, clean your home, moisturize your skin, and drink from a water bottle — all simple daily routines. But many of the products used in these routines contain compounds that may quietly influence your hormones, energy levels, and overall wellness.

This is not about fear. It's about awareness — and giving yourself the information to make empowered choices.

    What Are "Everyday Toxins"?

Everyday toxins — sometimes called environmental toxins or endocrine disruptors — are chemicals found in common household products, personal care items, food packaging, and even tap water. They may include:

    • Phthalates — found in fragranced products, plastics, and personal care items
    • Parabens — commonly used as preservatives in lotions, shampoos, and cosmetics
    • BPA and BPS — found in plastics, canned food linings, and thermal receipt paper
    • Pesticide residues — present on conventionally grown produce
    • Heavy metals — such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, which may be found in water, soil, and certain foods
    • PFAS — persistent chemicals found in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and food packaging

How These May Affect Your Energy and Hormones

Many of these compounds are classified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they may interfere with the body's hormonal signaling. Even in small amounts over time, they may contribute to:

    • Fatigue and low energy that doesn't improve with rest
    • Hormonal imbalances, including estrogen dominance
    • Thyroid dysfunction or sluggish metabolism
    • Increased inflammation
    • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
    • Mood changes, irritability, or anxiety

For women in midlife — especially during perimenopause and menopause — these effects may layer on top of natural hormonal shifts, making symptoms feel more intense or harder to resolve.

This is where a more intentional, whole-person approach becomes important — what I often refer to as the P.U.L.S.E. Method: learning to pause, become aware of what your body may be communicating, and respond in a way that supports balance rather than adds additional stress.

    Where to Start Looking

You don't need to test every product in your home. Start by becoming curious about what you use most often:

    • Personal care — lotions, deodorants, shampoos, makeup
    • Cleaning products — sprays, detergents, air fresheners
    • Food storage — plastic containers, non-stick pans, cling wrap
    • Indoor air quality — VOCs from furniture, paint, and household products
    • Water sources — filtered vs. unfiltered tap water, contaminants, and mineral content
    • Ongoing device and wireless exposure (EMFs) — constant connectivity and electromagnetic environments

In today's world, even less visible factors — such as constant connectivity and device exposure — may play a role in how the body experiences stress over time.

Resources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) can help you evaluate products and find cleaner alternatives at every price point.

    Awareness, Not Alarm

The goal is never to create anxiety about what you're exposed to. It's to gently expand your awareness so you can make informed, empowered choices — one product, one habit at a time.

Your body is remarkably resilient. When you reduce the burden on it and support its natural processes, you may be surprised by how much better you begin to feel.

You don't need to change everything. You just need to start noticing — and that is a powerful first step.
