Chronic pain has a biology. And biology responds to what we do every day — with consistency, patience, and skilled partnership.

Pain Has a Biology — and Biology Responds to Daily Choices

Chronic pain is not simply a signal that something is broken. It is a complex, dynamic, whole-body biological process — profoundly influenced by inflammation, nervous system state, nutritional status, sleep, stress, movement patterns, and the story the brain is telling about the body.

This is simultaneously sobering and profoundly hopeful. Because if chronic pain has a biology, that biology responds to what we do every day.

Understanding Chronic Inflammation — The Root Driver

    The NF-kB Pathway

NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) is a master switch for inflammation. When activated — by inflammatory foods, stress, toxins, poor sleep, or gut dysbiosis — it turns on hundreds of inflammatory genes simultaneously. The goal of a root cause approach to chronic pain is to reduce the inputs that keep NF-kB activated.

    Nutritional Deficiencies and Pain

Magnesium deficiency is strongly associated with increased pain sensitivity, muscle cramps, headaches, and fibromyalgia-type symptoms. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to widespread musculoskeletal pain and reduced pain threshold. Omega-3 deficiency means fewer natural anti-inflammatory prostaglandins available to buffer pain signals.

Key Cellular Support for Chronic Pain

Coaching education only — not prescription. All supplementation should be evaluated with your healthcare provider.

    • ✦Magnesium: reduces muscle tension, nerve excitability, and inflammatory pain signaling.
    • ✦Omega-3 fatty acids: precursors to resolvins and protectins — the body’s natural inflammation resolution molecules.
    • ✦Curcumin: inhibits NF-kB — one of the central pain and inflammation signaling pathways.
    • ✦Vitamin D: regulates pain-modulating immune responses throughout the entire body.
    • ✦CoQ10: supports mitochondrial energy production in depleted, pain-fatigued cells.
    • ✦Glutathione: master antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress in chronically inflamed tissues.
    • ✦Phosphatidylcholine (PC): essential phospholipid that rebuilds damaged cell membranes, supports mitochondrial function, and helps reduce neuroinflammation at the cellular level.
    • ✦Movement-generated myokines: among the most potent natural anti-inflammatory compounds available.

Central Sensitization — When the Volume Gets Turned Up

One of the most important concepts in chronic pain is central sensitization — a state in which the central nervous system becomes amplified and hypersensitive to pain signals. The nervous system’s “volume knob” gets turned up, so that signals that would normally be minor become intense.

Central sensitization explains fibromyalgia, many forms of chronic back pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and the seemingly disproportionate pain responses many people experience. And critically — it is reversible. The nervous system can learn to turn down the volume through consistent, patient, holistic support.

The nervous system can learn to feel safe again. That learning is the doorway back to ease.

    Movement as Cellular Medicine

Working muscles release myokines — interleukin-6 and other compounds that function as powerful, natural anti-inflammatories throughout the body. Exercise increases endorphins and endocannabinoids — the body’s natural pain modulators. Movement generates BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which supports nervous system repair and pain reprocessing.

Start where you are. 10 minutes of walking. Gentle yoga. Water movement. Stretching. Daily consistency at a level that honors your current capacity builds the foundation for expanded energy and ease over time.

    Your Daily Pain Healing Rhythm

    • ✦Morning: Gentle movement before the day’s demands. Anti-inflammatory breakfast.
    • ✦Nourishment: Anti-inflammatory foods at every meal — omega-3s, colorful vegetables, no refined sugar.
    • ✦Stress stewardship: Daily nervous system reset. Breathwork, nature, prayer, creative expression.
    • ✦Movement: 10–20 minutes of gentle, joyful movement. Consistent > intense.
    • ✦Evening: Wind-down ritual. Epsom salt bath. Magnesium before bed.
    • ✦Sleep: 7–9 hours. This is when inflammation resolves and tissue repairs.
    ✦ The Energy Stewardship™ Connection

Chronic pain affects far more than physical comfort. It shapes sleep, mood, energy, focus, and the capacity to show up fully for the work, relationships, and purpose that matter most.

Energy Stewardship™ begins by noticing what the body is communicating and making informed, sustainable choices in partnership with appropriate wellness and healthcare professionals.

    Jah’s 4D Approach™:
Define It → Dream It → Differentiate It → Do It.

Questions to Bring to Your Healthcare Team
    • ?Which inflammatory markers — hs-CRP, ESR, ferritin — would be helpful to evaluate in my case?
    • ?Could central sensitization be contributing to my pain pattern? What approaches would you recommend?
    • ?Would magnesium, Vitamin D, or omega-3 status be worth testing for my situation?
    • ?How do my current medications interact with the lifestyle strategies I am considering?
    • ?What kind of movement plan is safe and appropriate given my current pain level and history?
    • ?How can we monitor progress as I make lifestyle adjustments over time?

A Closing Thought from Coach Dana B

Pain has asked so much of you. Now it is asking you to listen — not to suffer more, but to respond with wisdom, with care, and with the understanding that your body is capable of more healing than you have been told.

Your diagnosis is not your destiny. Your body is not your enemy. And you do not have to figure this out alone.
